Texas Whitetail Hunting: What You Need to Know

There’s no hunting experience more American — or more satisfying — than that of tracking down and taking a shot at a whitetail deer. And there’s no place better to do just that than in the wild West Texas Hill Country. The Lazy CK Whitetail & Exotic Hunting Ranch is located deep in the heart of that wilderness. We’ve set aside 7,000 acres of prime land, abundant with expertly managed herds of whitetail and numerous other exotic species, all for your hunting pleasure.

Hunting in the West Texas Hill Country is a unique and exhilarating experience. The Lazy CK Whitetail Deer & Exotic Hunting ranch is a sprawling preserve set amidst the headwaters of the Frio, Nueces and Guadalupe Rivers. It includes rugged, rocky ridges, stands of shin oak and wide expanses of pasture grass, all of it fenced-in and managed according to the stringent regulations of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Managed Lands Deer (MLD) permit program. With our modern, scientific and humane herd management, we’ve bred a wide variety of large, healthy and mature native and exotic animals. These trophies are yours for the taking — provided you’re up to the challenge.

Deer season in Texas

There are a few things every hunter asks about hunting in the West Texas Hill Country, and we have the answers. For example, whitetail (or white-tailed) deer are numerous and, thanks to predator management to safeguard sheep and goat herding, that population is on the rise. Texas, however, places a statewide annual bag limit of five whitetail deer, no more than three of which may be bucks. Restrictions are also imposed on legal buck sizes in Texas, as determined by the animal’s antlers.

Furthermore, hunting deer in Texas requires a permit. The practice is also limited by season and weapon. Open season for archery, for example, runs from September 29 to November 2 in 2018. The general season for rifle begins November 3 and ends in early January, with extensions for youth-only hunting. Muzzleloaders have a narrow window of their own, from January 7 through 20 in 2019.

Whitetail hunting season in Texas

Texas hunters who choose to visit Lazy CK Ranch are in luck, however. Because we’re members of Texas’ MLD program, we’re allowed an extended season that runs from October 1 through the end of February. In addition, we can offer both regular hunts and herd management hunts. All you have to bring are your hunting clothes, coolers to carry off the meat and your weapon of choice. Any legal weapons and type of ammunition are allowed, subject to state regulations.

From there, we take care of the paperwork and make sure you remain in compliance with all state regulations regarding what you can — and cannot — hunt. Our fees cover not only the staff to do the paperwork but also guides and other professionals who will retrieve the animal, prepare and pack the meat, and ready the trophy head. While we’re attending to those tasks, you and your family, friends, co-workers or clients can enjoy cozy, comfortable and relaxing accommodations as well as fine dining at our lodge.
